    Although I believe myself to be a late beginner, as a self taught pianist, I feel like I'm in this weird spot where I have very huge gaps in knowledge both music theory and playing wise. For instance, I don't know how to name or play any piano chords and such technical stuff, however I'm very comfortable playing in any key signature and using the entire piano as well as quickly moving around quickly like in gnossienne no.5. I think my ability to understand the nature and feeling of a song is good enough and many people I know who are skilled in piano claimed my musical expression was great when I performed Gymnopedie no.1 (one of the first pieces I have ever learned) and Gnossiennses 1-5. So I'm just a bit confused as where I would be classified

    This is a very well-constructed explanation and method of teaching. I am a decently accomplished musician in other areas (mostly the Rock n Roll School of Hard Knocks), but lately have been writing a lot on piano to develop some more skills and a different perspective on songwriting. I have a background in formal music instruction, but that was way back in the 90s. I'm relearning how to read music and getting into some theory, mostly with chord chemistry and exploring new keys. The layout of the piano gives me a better visual than the guitar, even though I am very familiar with playing guitar, and it opens up crazy opportunities for creativity. So, the other goal is to get more comfortable on the piano, so I can make that creativity happen. (Looking forward to doing that 12-week scales challenge.) Anyway, I'm so glad to have found you. I tend to trust credentials when it comes to teaching and you have it nailed. I like your teaching style a lot. I wrote out your "procedure" on the back of the music, and I am giving all of those methods a shot, with this piece being the vehicle. I'm learning this one, no matter how long it takes. Cool video!

    • @PianoRoadmap
      @PianoRoadmap День тому

      Good luck! I agree that the keyboard gives the best visual when learning music theory. I dabbled in composing for film for a bit, and found that learning another instrument was great for sparking creativity. Hope the same for you!

    Could I please ask what the difference is between the dotted half note which has 3 beats and the quarter note with a dot?

    • @PianoRoadmap
      @PianoRoadmap 3 дні тому

      The dot adds half of the note's value to itself. When you add a dot to a half note, it adds 1 beat (half of 2) to itself for a total of 3 beats. When you add a dot to a quarter note, it adds 1/2 beat (half of 1) to itself for a total of 1 1/2 beats. Hope that helps!

      If you just plan to dip your toes in the water, I think it's fine to get a 61-key digital piano. However, if you can spend the extra, 88-keys is best, and weighted keys are ideal for developing piano technique. I can't recommend a specific digital piano as it's been so long since I've bought one, but if want to join our Facebook community (facebook.com/groups/pianoroadmap) lots of people there will have recs for you.

    this comment is not about this video specifically though I am a late beginner for sure. i've been laid up with sciatica for a month, and I have not been able to sit in a chair or on a bench. I just started playing piano a couple months before this started. are there any mental exercises or finger exercises that can be done while not sitting in front of a piano that might help retain what I'd learned. surgery is scheduled, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to sit again. Thanks for all the great videos!!

    • @PianoRoadmap

      I'm so sorry to hear that! You might consider buying a shorter keyboard (61-keys or less) that is light enough to lay on a lap table across your legs in bed or in a recliner. I don't know if you're able to sit reclined at all, but this could offer a chance to keep your fingers moving a little. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
